It is an orally active, dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPPIV) inhibitor which lowers blood glucoselevels by blocking the degradation of the hormone GLP-1 thereby stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion and lowering blood glucoselevels without hypoglycemic effects.
